Ordinary people in Tarrant County will feel the effects of a new UN secretary-general through trade rules, climate agreements, and the tone of global diplomacy. The current search for the next leader of the United Nations is moving quickly. Former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban is now a serious contender after American officials reportedly invited him to run.

The push for Orban appears to be a calculated move to secure a rare alignment of global powers. According to sources from three countries, Washington believes Moscow and Beijing would also support his candidacy. If that happens, Orban would become a joint candidate backed by the three largest permanent members of the Security Council. Officials stated that when these three powers agree on an outcome, they can usually secure the necessary votes.

A US State Department official provided specific numbers to gauge the feasibility of this alliance. The official estimated that eight of the council's 15 members would easily support Orban. The official further suggested he might reach as many as 10 votes. This calculation suggests a strong majority, though no country has made a public commitment yet.

The positions of the United Kingdom and France remain the main uncertainty. Both are permanent members with veto power. The report indicates they might allow a candidate with a council majority and support from the other three permanent members to proceed. Neither London nor Paris has taken an official stance on Orban so far.

Orban has shown interest in the role but has not made a final decision. He reportedly voiced reservations because he identifies as a nationalist politician. He is also unwilling to announce a bid unless he is confident of winning. He declined to comment on the reports. Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to back him if he runs. Any announcement would likely wait until after the US midterm elections.

The State Department official described Orban as the dream candidate for MAGA conservatives. This assessment pointed to his opposition to large-scale immigration and liberal nongovernmental organizations. It also cited his clashes with the European Union and his closer ties with China. Another official noted that Orban would bring the approach of a political leader used to wielding power, unlike the current field of international bureaucrats.

Critics raised concerns that his appointment could make the post a defender of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other authoritarian leaders. His ties to Moscow and Beijing, along with his record in Hungary, would face scrutiny. Among the declared candidates is Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh, who entered the race last week. She is expected to answer questions on Tuesday ahead of a Security Council straw poll on Wednesday. Antonio Guterres's term ends on December 31.
