Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the Brazilian presidential runoff on Sunday with more than 64 million votes. His opponent, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, received just under 60 million votes. The margin of victory stands at nearly 4 percent. Lula is set to take office on Jan. 5, 2027, for a fourth non-consecutive term.

Flávio Bolsonaro announced on Sunday that he will request an annulment of the election. He cited a chaotic extension of voting hours that occurred at the request of both candidates. It remains unclear which legal avenue he will pursue. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, serves a 27-year sentence for a coup attempt and also contested his loss in 2022.

President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that the reelection was rigged. He told reporters before flying to Mississippi that the tabulation looked bad. He described the process as having a very bad look without providing specific evidence of fraud.

The outcome hinged on a surge in voter participation. An additional 14.1 million voters turned out for the second round compared to the first. Analysts estimate that three-quarters of those late votes went to Lula. The first round set a record for abstentions, while the second round recorded the lowest number of abstentions in history.

Lawmaker André Janones led the digital campaign for the incumbent. His team created a WhatsApp channel called Lula's Army that gathered almost 11 million people. They used social media to mobilize previously uncommitted voters. Professor Oliver Stuenkel noted that the strategy adopted an aggressive style similar to the right's approach.

Brazil’s electoral court ruled on Oct. 15 that Meta must ensure equal treatment for both candidates. The company later said it addressed the issue. Professor Juliano Cortinhas stated that platforms had used algorithms to amplify far-right messages more than left-wing ones.

Kassio Nunes, president of Brazil’s electoral authority, recognized Lula’s victory on Sunday. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by Jair Bolsonaro. Brian Winter, editor-in-chief of Americas Quarterly, said that Brazilian power brokers are closing ranks behind Lula. He added that they do not want a truly contested election.

Lula faces a right-wing Congress where Bolsonaro's party holds the most seats. Flávio Bolsonaro remains a senator until January. The next step is a legal review of the annulment bid. Lula’s inauguration is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2027.
