Arlington ISD will host a Pre-K Literacy Night on Nov. 5 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Berry Elementary, located at 1800 Joyce St. in Arlington. The event invites families with pre-kindergarten children to participate in stories and literacy activities.

District officials aim to use the evening to foster a lasting interest in reading among early learners. Dr. Elena Guerrero, the Arlington ISD director of instruction and curriculum for pre-K through second grade, noted that shared reading time helps shape how children think, listen, and view the world.

Dr. Guerrero stated that reading together early on boosts vocabulary and strengthens the bond between parent and child. She added that this practice builds the confidence children need to succeed in the classroom.

Mary Eldredge, a librarian at the Kooken Educational Center, emphasized the long-term benefits of early literacy. She cited research by Nagy and Herman in 1987, which found that students who read for 20 minutes a day are likely to score in the top 10% on standardized tests.

Eldredge said that this level of reading changes the academic trajectory of a student. She also highlighted the value of the experience itself, noting that children gain wonderful memories from reading with family members.
